Geoffrey Chaucer was born in 1343 in London, England and died in 1400. His name is derived from the French chausseur, meaning shoemaker. He was captured in 1360 during the siege of Rheims, becoming a prisoner of war. Around 1366, Chaucer married Philippa (de) Roet. The ill queen had her as a lady in waiting. Chaucer and Philippa are said to have three or four children. Chaucer was a well traveled individual. He went on trips all over the world some of his trips were pilgrimages on his own ,and some may have been for the government. Unlike many famous artists and writers Chaucer was appreciated came when Edward III granted Chaucer "a gallon of wine daily for the rest of his life" for an unspecified task. Chaucer's most notable work today is the Canterbury Tales. The jobs probably exposed him to many of the types of people he depicted in the Tales, making him the perfect person for writing the tales. His death came on October 25, 1400 for causes not known.
